The author, an Asian medalist, answers questions about armwrestling.
The question this time is “What is the wrist strength required for armwrestling?”.
I will tell you the answer.
The strength of the wrist required for armwrestling differs depending on the technique, and the training method also differs.
Wrist strength

What is wrist strength?
It is commonly referred to as “wrist strength,” but in reality, the wrist is made up of bones, joints, and ligaments, as shown in the figure, and there are no muscles there.
Strictly speaking, it is the “strength of the forearm muscles” because it is the forearm muscles that control the movement of the wrist.
The forearm muscle group is composed of more than 20 muscles and performs complex wrist movements.
These are classified into “forearm flexor muscle group” and “forearm extensor muscle group”.
Two techniques of armwrestling

Two techniques of armwrestling
There are two techniques for armwrestling: top roll and hook.
The features of each technique are as follows.
Wrist strength required for top roll

Wrist strength required for top roll
Top roll features
Top roll is a technique that uses the principle of lever to lift the opponent’s fingertips and roll diagonally backward to defeat the opponent.
The operating trajectory is as follows.
Top roll movement trajectory

Top roll movement trajectory
In the top roll, the following three movements are performed in a circular motion.
① Lift the opponent’s fingertips
② Attract the opponent’s fist
③ Roll your fist
Strength required for top roll

Strength required for top roll
Due to the characteristics and trajectory of these techniques, the top roll requires “bending (power to raise a fist)” and “pronation (power to roll)”.
Specifically, it is the brachioradialis and forearm flexor muscles.
Wrist strength required for hook

Wrist strength required for hook
Features of the hook
Hook is a technique to wind your wrist and at the same time use your opponent’s fist as an underlay for your wrist and push it down sideways.
Hook movement trajectory

Hook movement trajectory
The hook performs the following three movements in a circular motion.
① Wind your wrist
② Attract to the front
③ Push down sideways
Strength required for hook

Strength required for hook
Due to the characteristics and trajectory of these techniques, the hook requires “palm flexion (force to bend the wrist)” and “supination (force to twist)”.
Specifically, it is the forearm flexor muscle group.
How to train the strength of the wrist

How to train the strength of the wrist in armwrestling
