Peer Review Session for Healthy Planning Research and Tools March 18, 2010

Heather Kuiper of the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health will present "Creating Healthy Places: Strategies for California's Local Health Agencies"at the next peer review session on Thursday, March 18, 2010 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 noon at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, 1390 Market Street, Suite 910. Public Health Analysis using GIS - Workshop January 2010

SFDPH will be holding 3 Saturday workshops around public health using GIS on January 23, 30, and February 6 from 10am - 1pm. SFDPH provides on-line tools for community members and organizations to assess the health of San Francisco neighborhoods using hundreds of factors. The Health Impact Assessment (HIA) tools are important in policy decisions, project developments, and analyzing the health inequities. Students will learn how these tools effect policy and demonstrations on how these tools are used. Register at the GIS Education Center and Enroll Now.

 

Cumulative Effects of Traffic in Excelsior December 2009

A special supplement in the November issue of the American Journal of Public Health highlights a "Field Action Report" from DPH's Program on Health, Equity and Sustainability. DPH staff collaborated with PODER (People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights) and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, to research the impacts on air pollution, noise, and pedestrian safety stemming from freight and automobile traffic in the Excelsior/Southeast area of San Francisco. As a result of the findings, the Board of Supervisors issued a resolution directing DPH, SFMTA, and local legislative staff to identify and implement policies that protect the health of residents when making decisions about truck and traffic planning.

 

Bicycle Environmental Quality Index (BEQI) Report November 2009

PHES is pleased to release the Bicycle Environmental Quality Index (BEQI) Draft Report 2009 and instruments for BEQI data collection.  BEQI is a quantitative observational survey to assess the bicycle environment on roadways and evaluate what streetscape improvements could be made to promote bicycling in San Francisco. The BEQI can be used on a street segment basis where the results can help inform neighborhood planning and prioritize improvements through the land use plans and environmental assessments.
